Shockingly, only 0.8 million hectares was replanted. Romania&’s untouched, virgin forest represents 65% of the total remaining virgin forests in Europe, excluding those found in Russia.

What happens across Romania

366.000 ha

Between 1990 -2011, in Romania 366 000 hectares of forest were officially cleared.

3 ha in 1 hour

3 ha are deforested every single hour. Adding up to 8.8 million cubic meters of timber per year. The illegally cut timber in Romania represents 50% of the whole timber amount that is harvested.

28 Counties

More than 28 Romanian counties are affected by illegal deforestation, and as a result, thousands of wildlife species and plants are in immediate danger!

26.7 Percent

26.7% of Romania’ s territory consist of forest, approximately 6 380 000 hectares.

Just 3 Percent

In 1974, 12% of Romania forests were virgin. In 2011 the percentage has decreased dramatically to just 3%. Of this 3% only 18% are currently protected by law.

43.000 ha

43000 hectares of forest has been illegally cut in Bacau county over the past4 years.

The cold facts

Tragically, over the past 10 years, 280 000 hectare of forest has been lost in Romania. But the reality today is even worse. Presently, each and every day, 41 hectares of forest are illegally destroyed. The area deforested illegally has become the size of Austria.
