Winter is cruel for abandoned cats and dogs living on the streets. In Romania, temperatures can fall to a bitter 21°F in winter, while in Ukraine, they can plunge as low as -4°F. These painfully freezing conditions leave little hope for homeless animals who have nobody to protect them.
Whether a mother dog is desperately trying to keep her newborn puppies warm and alive, or a senior cat is wandering the icy streets alone in search of food – they deserve better this festive season. They deserve to be fed and cared for. They deserve a chance to feel safe and warm.

Hope: rescued and badly injured

Pickles: enjoying Christmas at home
When a man came across Hope – a vulnerable and homeless mother dog – he simply couldn’t leave her.
He managed to catch her after a week of trying, but in her panic, Hope had become trapped in barbed wire and suffered serious injuries – worst of all to her eyes. One had to be completely removed, with almost no vision remaining in the other.
Hope was brought to a ROLDA shelter – and when she was finally well enough, the most beautiful moment came when she was allowed out onto the grass. For a moment, you didn’t see her injuries or her impaired vision. You simply saw a dog enjoying the feeling of grass beneath her paws.
But one question remained: Would anyone want to adopt a dog who was severely visually impaired?
One day, the application we had been hoping for arrived. A family had made up their minds that Hope belonged with them.
Hope became Pickle and just kept surprising her new family with her sweet and playful side.
Now Pickle is a deeply loved member of her family, with her own bed and her own toys. Best of all she gets to enjoy Christmas safe, warm and adored.
A true miracle story. A dog once so frightened that no one could get close to her, who finally made it all the way home.

This Christmas, 12 very special ROLDA residents have a story to share and a Christmas wish they’re hoping will come true. Each has their own tale of rescue, recovery and hope. While their journeys may be different, they all share one thing in common: they’re still waiting for their Christmas wish to come true.

Sparky arrived at the shelter together with his siblings after someone discovered them in an abandoned house in a village near Galați. He is still a little afraid of the world and can be shy when meeting new people. But give Sparky some time, patience, and kindness, and his personality begins to shine through. Once he feels safe, he becomes friendly and playful, showing the sweet young dog hiding behind his initial fear. What Sparky needs most is someone willing to give him the time to trust.

Toto is Sparky’s brother and shares much of his gentle, cautious nature. Because he hasn’t had much experience interacting with different people, Toto can be reserved at first. For him, trust is something that needs to be learned slowly. But little by little, he is becoming more confident and discovering that people can bring kindness, affection, and safety. With patience and love, Toto has every chance to blossom into a wonderful companion.

When Solara was found alone in a field, she had deep wounds on her legs and abdomen. She needed medical care, and our veterinarian began treating her. Thankfully, Solara recovered and is now doing well. Despite everything she went through, she remains a wonderfully friendly and loving dog. Her wounds have healed, and now she deserves the chance to experience the happier side of life, surrounded by the love and security every dog deserves.

Diana was found in a village near Tulcea together with her three puppies. A family discovered her almost starving, desperately trying to survive with her little ones beside her, and brought them to safety. Today, Diana's story looks very different. Two of her puppies have already been adopted in Sweden and have begun their new lives. After taking care of her babies through such difficult circumstances, we hope Diana will also have the chance to find a loving family of her own.

Franco was rescued by Ms. Sânziana and brought from Bucharest after undergoing surgery to repair a broken jaw, most likely caused by a car accident. When he was rescued, his ears were also covered in bloody scabs. Franco is a little shy and reserved at first, but once he learns to trust you, he loves being petted, cuddled, and spoiled with affection. Due to the injuries he sustained, Franco also had to have his left eye surgically removed (enucleation), so he only has one eye.

Mitzi was rescued by a kind lady and brought to us all the way from Tulcea. He received treatment for gastrointestinal issues and requires a special diet to keep him healthy. Mitzi is one of the sweetest and friendliest cats we have ever met. He is incredibly affectionate, loves being around people, and is always eager for attention, cuddles, and love.

Paris was found in a village near Galați with severe wounds to his abdomen, most likely caused by dog bites. He has now made a full recovery and is healthy, with no remaining health issues. Paris is a sweet, affectionate boy who loves attention, enjoys being petted, and is always happy to receive some tasty treats!

Tripli-Simy was involved in a car accident that left one of his legs severely injured, with a crushed bone and an open fracture. Sadly, his leg could not be saved and had to be amputated. Someone found him in agony and rushed him to the veterinary clinic that also provides care for the dogs in our shelters. Despite everything he has been through, Tripli-Simy is a sweet, loving little boy who craves affection and enjoys being close to people.

Dagmar is one of Diana’s puppies, and she is growing into a friendly, playful young dog. Her story began in difficult circumstances, beside her mother who was found almost starving. But Dagmar now has the opportunity to leave that difficult beginning behind. She is full of youthful energy and ready to discover everything that life can offer, especially the joy of having a family of her own.

Mira came to our shelter from Buzău in 2024 after a woman who had heard about ROLDA wanted to bring her into our care. After some time, we noticed that something wasn’t quite right with Mira's health. Mira has a heart malformation and will require treatment for the rest of her life. Her condition means that Mira's journey may be a little different from that of other dogs, but it doesn't make her any less deserving of love, care, and a safe future.

Rocky arrived at the shelter together with his siblings. Like many dogs who haven't always known what to expect from people, he can be a little hesitant when he first meets someone new. But give Rocky the chance to get comfortable, and you'll discover a friendly young dog who enjoys attention. Behind that initial hesitation is a dog who simply needs to know that he is safe and cared for.

Carmen was still just a tiny puppy when she and her siblings lost the place they called home. Carmen was brought to us together with her siblings, giving this little girl the chance to grow up in safety instead of facing life on the streets. At only six months old, Carmen still has her whole life ahead of her. We hope the next chapter will bring her the loving home every puppy deserves.
