Like others, ROLDA lobbies for government & law enforcement to do more to eliminate puppy mills. The truth is that the only way for countries to get rid completely of this is to stop the demand. But it is not a truth that everyone is ready to hear. One measure can be that the publications & websites to be prohibited from running adverts that are clearly from puppy mills. Those responsible must face be investigated and permanently shut down. Meanwhile, ROLDA saves dogs from puppy-mills.

Sadly, a huge number of animals abused in puppy mills often run out of time because they don’t afford the luxury of waiting for slow legal system to remember about their rights. This is why we rolled up our sleeves and until big changes will (if ever) happen at official level, through our contacts, we manage to get inside & rescue the puppy mills victims. Their local protegees can’t afford to pay the necessary veterinary bills & they don’t have the resources to find new forever homes for all these dogs saved from horrible living conditions & pure neglect. Our first group of dogs rescued from puppy mills were eight female French Bulldogs & a little puppy. They were mentally & physically wrecked urgently needing specialist care.

We are committed to do more to eliminate puppy mills structures where animals are abused & exploited. We created the Global Awareness Campaign where each of us can “speak up” to end the global dog crisis in puppy mills: please join us and also, help us promote it far & wide. You can also donate to help dogs saved from these horrible places get access to emergency veterinary care or long term post-surgery recovery. Together, our voice will be stronger for the voiceless and harder to be ignored.

Education is the key to progress & speaking facts, presenting photos can open the eyes to the community to get informed about these dogs’ drama, which can’t leave indifferent any real animal lover. It is up to them to choose after if they buy a dog & fuel these places to continue to exist or find a different solution. If anyone you know is thinking about getting a puppy, please help them to make the right choice. Ultimately, each of us is responsible for our own decisions in a world we all live.

Iris is a sweet elderly girl, weighing just 2 kg and about 20 cm tall. She has been through a lot, having faced both an eye tumor and multiple mammary tumors. Her affected eye was surgically removed, and the tumors have also been successfully treated. Iris is now recovering and slowly regaining her strength, showing incredible resilience for her age.

Our first built (small) shelter is now twenty years old and despite being nominated multiple times for the best shelter in Romania, its age is beginning to show and is in need of some TLC. ROLDA holds to the highest standards of comfort and care and control disease management is a top priority for us, in both our shelteras but we need help maintaining those standards and providing the best possible facilities for our dogs.

Whilst Romanian law currently prohibits the sterilisation of stray dogs (and their returning to the wild), ROLDA are operating sterilisation campaigns in poor communities, targeting the pets of low- income families who could not afford private veterinary care. These campaigns tackle abandonment– one of the primary contributing factors to the national homeless dog crisis – in two key ways.

In a shelter with hundreds of dogs, highly contagious diseases – such as distemper – could be devastating. This is why ROLDA imposes a strict quarantine period for all new rescued dogs, during which they receive broad-spectrum vaccines before they are let socialize with current residents of our shelter. However, vaccinations must be ‘topped-up’ annually with booster shots.
