Sterilization campaign in Galati and Smardan.

ROLDA Newsletter, January 2012

Dear Supporters and Friends,

Take a minute to read our first newsletter for 2012. It presents briefly a new local campaign started by ROLDA, updates on free sterilizations, rescue cases and fresh-news-bites. It also promotes the Super Spay Day event (which will be organized in February month) and a reminder about how we are carefully planning this year' activity. Plus a great news: we were able to rescue 8 dogs from the local pound!

jan_news1

Being fully aware of the financial difficulties that affect us all, we would be very grateful if you could simply keep us in mind in case you can spare a penny in future or visit this page to select the most suitable method in which you can help our mission in Romania.

SAVE THE DOGS FROM GALATI POUNDS

The two local pounds from Galati (administrated by the City Hall from public funds)are overcrowded for years. The manager of these pounds’ and the Mayor of Galati declare that only sick dogs are put to sleep, while their own records and the numbers show a different and cruel reality.

End of November 2011, the pounds manager was interviewed in regard to this odd situation but except some excuses, nothing changed. The sick or aggressive dogs are euthanized while unasserted dogs (collected from streets) often are gone too.

ROLDA hope to find homes for some of the dogs imprisoned in the local pounds.

We managed to find a way to take out periodically few dogs out of that Hell, where they are convicted to die and after checking their health, sterilize, etc to re-home them.

On 23rd January, first 8 dogs were saved and transfered in our care. Please note that these rescue efforts are independent of steel plant ‘support and we must raise funds for vaccines, sterilizations, gas for van, microchips, passports and transport cages.

These dogs’ lives are now in our hands. We will keep you updated.

A SECOND CHANCE

Because pets’ abandon in Romania is a serious problem and because local animal lovers must have an alternative and not just sympathetic words, ROLDA started A DOUA SANSA/A SECOND CHANCE Campaign.

Costs involved with this new campaign: veterinary checking bills, veterinary periodic treatments against worms and others parasites. Sometimes the costs of sterilization and long-term treatment are required.

STERILIZATIONS NEWS

The New Year started with great ambitions from ROLDA team part. We aim to sterilize 1000 females until 2012 ends. These plans will be more tangible if we will find more clinics to partner with for sterilizations and if our supporters will contribute with as little as 20 USD/each.

Considering we have over 1000 names on our lists, we could achieve the 1000 spaying goals in a blink.

The first step was already done.

On 16 December, ROLDA signed a protocol with City Hall Smardan which states that the authorities will not touch (catch, take, kill) dogs sterilized and marked by us. There is not a high number of street dogs in Smardan but being close to the Galati town, it is one of the place where people dump the unwanted dogs and where, due to heavy traffic, the most tragedies happen(dogs and puppies being hit by car, injured or often killed).

We’d like to give a good example by sterilizing street dogs roaming free and the ones from people’s gardens. Help us to sterilize dogs in Smardan!

We gratefully remind you that your donation is needed to continue the sterilization campaign in Galati, to keep it free for local poor community and also not be forced to turn down people that rely on our promised support.

MORE HOPES FOR 2012

Purchasing a new large van will help small charities and individuals who have no financial resources to organize transport from their location to Bucharest airport or other meeting points. A newer large van costs 16000 EUR or more but a Dacia type van, second hand, is approx 6000 EUR.

The following campaigns are already described on ROLDA website; we remind them briefly to you because we still need your help to continue or complete them.

The Natural Shelter will be a refuge for dogs with little to no chances to be rehomed. Seniors, with disabilities, shy, dominants. We want to raise funds for an acre of land at a time, hoping to buy a property of 20 or more acres, to fence it and create a comfortable secure space for these dogs, born on the streets, being used to be free –which will not live in prison crates for the rest of their lives, thanks to you.

Help ROLDA to buy the first acre of land!

The large shelter welcomes monthly 500 dogs which were saved from the steel plant or from other industrial sites. The monthly expenses for this facility are generously paid by AMG.

Adding water and electricity to the REX clinic are also investments to be sponsored in 2012 by AMG, our amazing local sponsor.

However, there are still some things for which we need funding, and we hope to be helped by ROLDA individual supporters to improve the life of hundreds of dogs ,which are in our care every day. We also hope that by accomplishing the additional projects –AMG will be pleasantly surprised to note that even the international community respect and admire their investment for Romanian dogs.

Building at least 4 large running spaces where dogs from the kennels can run, play and socialize.

Purchase the veterinary equipment for the REX clinic. AMG invested 60000 EUR in its building and empty rooms don’t serve the goal for which it was created. Modern equipment (acquired in time) will save and help small and large animals. Meanwhile we need basics like autoclave, ultrasound equipment, surgery lights, scale, recovery cages, sterilization instruments.

Surgery tables and some supplies were donated by our amazing ROLDA Nederland friends!

The small shelter is the Adoption Center, where dogs rescued are evaluated, rehabilitated and 100% safely re-homed. We still need close to 5000 EUR to pay the last year’ debts and also renovate the small paddock and the cottage- to be able to welcome volunteers in winter time.

Because running the Adoption Center depends exclusively on private donations, we remind you the monthly needs there:

1000kg to 1500kg dry dog food plus special diets or canned food, puppy milk replacer or puppy food costs approx. 1500 EUR every month. First aid supplies, treats and biscuits are always gratefully appreciated. Please see here a complete wishlist.

If you want to respond to our special funds request for the Adoption Center, please help us purchase 30 new dog beds.

The ideal situation would be to hire a second person to help Flori with the daily routine, because the work she does is exhausting and it’s not for a single person. This will require supporters’ commitment because every month 200 EUR must be raised, in addition to the current monthly costs, to pay the new salary. It would be excellent if one of our friends will offer to sponsor this .
