The only corporation in the World that decided to invest to humanely approach and solve the homeless dogs' problem from its premises.
His body stopped shaking, his head came out from the grass. Only then Delu (a member of the ROLDA team) could see the dog’s face, big portions of it only flesh and blood.
The vet who saw the dog within the next hour concluded that he was suffering from a chronic skin disease and in some areas it looked worse because of the dog's constant scratching.
We could only imagine what this dog had been going through before we spotted and rescued him.
Especially during hot summer days, fleas and ticks are an extra problem for dogs’ general health, and aggravate mange and other skin problems.
With just 20 EUR we can purchase a big bottle of Frontline spray, with 3 EUR a solution to disinfect the kennels area, or with 10 EUR a Frontline spot-on treatment for medium/bigger dogs.
Over the next weeks, our vet administrated strong treatments to control White’s problems. We named him White because we envisioned how lovely his fur would look when he was back to normal.
Time passed and White started looking like a king, shining in his new fur-armour. Most of the time, he plays with Dionis – his best friend. White is not a problematic dog, but something from his unknown history makes him keep his distance from humans.
He is adorable while he plays, and acts normally, but as soon as he realises you are looking at him, or wish to take a photo of him, he becomes reserved and something makes him doubtful, going two steps back, defensive.
It’s been a year since White came into our care. The treatment given by our great vet healed his fur troubles, but there is no medical “treatment” to cure a dog’s soul from previous trauma.
Dogs like White can’t be “forced” to become suddenly lovely pets in people’s company. They had probably tried to get closer to some people who then made them suffer. They learnt their lesson in a painful way and now they are confused when and how to open their heart for another try.
Dogs like White stay indefinitely in our care; we usually make small steps in the right way until the dog finally decides to give us his trust. Sometimes all it takes is a smell or a noise to put our rehabilitation work back to square one.
White will probably keep his distance for the weeks to come. Dogs like White can’t be left back on the streets, to be exposed to all the dangers brought by modern times or to be abused by people.
Every “unusual” dog needs a long time of rehabilitation and the right playmates to share its space while in the kennel.
You can sponsor a dog like White to enable him to enjoy his stay in our shelter, as it is our hope that eventually each of these dogs, with your help, will be united with the right family.
